Determined dispositions

‎"I am still determined to be cheerful and happy, in whatever situation I may be; for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances."

  1. As with other similar quotes, I am not one who believes that if you are depressed it is your own fault. Chemistry, biology, and neurology all play a role and if you believe that you have symptoms of clinical depression or other mental health conditions- consulting with trained professionals helps. However, for most of us, most of the time, our esteemed first First Lady is right on- too often we are crabby, sad, sullen, bored, or dissatisfied mostly because we pretty much chose to be.

  2. Ye, I prefer to be more laid back and care free. Most problems pass and the majority of them that come by don't have any lasting effect on me afterwards. So there's no reason to get all moody. Plus all worries are more easily fixed when you're calm and able to think more clearly.

  3. A former student of mine posted an excellent thought on facebook that I think relates, "You don’t have to control your thoughts...you just have to stop letting them control you."
